How to help children overcome stress during the COVID-19 epidemic

(Patria) - The World Health Organization in BiH advises on how to help children overcome stress during the COVID-19 epidemic

"Children can react to stress in various ways, for example, by being more worried, withdrawn, angry, or upset, etc. Respond to the child's reactions with support, listen to them as they talk about their worries, and provide them with extra love and attention.

Children need love and attention from adults during difficult times. Dedicate extra time and attention to them. Don't forget to listen to children, speak kindly to them, and encourage them. If possible, create opportunities for the child to play and relax.

Try to keep children close to parents and family and avoid separating them from loved ones. If separation occurs (e.g., hospitalization), ensure regular contact (e.g., by phone) and encourage them.

Adhere to a regular routine and schedule as much as possible or help create new ones in the new environment, including school and learning, as well as time for safe play and relaxation," it is stated.

State the facts about what happened, explain what is happening now, and give them clear information on how they can reduce their risk of infection in words they understand depending on their age. This includes informing them appropriately about what might happen (e.g., a family member might feel unwell and may need to go to the hospital for a while so doctors can help them feel better).
