SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Members of the Serbian Parliament, during the question period, debated whether Serbia should acknowledge that genocide was committed in Srebrenica.
The president of the Serbian Radical Party, Vojislav Šešelj, called on the Serbian government to "gather data and show the world public that genocide did not happen in Srebrenica, but that it was a deception and that the crime was organized from the outside," Beta reported.
Stating that European Commissioner Johannes Hahn said there is no place in the EU for those who deny that genocide occurred in Srebrenica, Šešelj called on the government to state that Serbia does not want to join the EU.
Member of the Party of Modern Serbia, Vladimir Đurić, said, shortly after Šešelj, that the European Parliament, in a Resolution last year, expressed its regret for the "continued denial of genocide in Srebrenica by some representatives of the Serbian authorities."
As he stated, the Resolution reminds that full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia also means accepting its decisions. It also states that acknowledging the genocide in Srebrenica is an important step on Serbia's path to the EU.
Đurić said he is interested in how the Ministry of European Integration and Prime Minister Ana Brnabić will react to such a provision of the EP Resolution.
"The International Court of Justice in The Hague has determined that genocide occurred in Srebrenica," said Đurić, adding that he is also interested in the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office presenting statistics on cases related to Srebrenica.
He also stated that denying genocide is punishable by imprisonment if the genocide has been established by a verdict of a domestic court or the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Čedomir Jovanović, leader of the LDP, one of the few Serbian politicians who visits Potočari on July 11 and publicly states that genocide was committed in Srebrenica, told N1 that Srebrenica increasingly troubles Serbia and Serbs, while Bosniaks, with the support of the world, increasingly find their peace.
"Serbia must open its eyes, it must be brave, it must acknowledge and take its share of responsibility for the genocide in Srebrenica because such a Serbia is needed by Serbs, Bosniaks, Croats in Serbia, Bosnia, and the entire region. For 24 years, it has been looking at the world with one eye, and in fact, it is blind," Jovanović emphasized.
