(Patria) - American tennis player John Isner (38), who became famous as a participant in the longest tennis match in history, played at Wimbledon in 2010, announced that he will retire from professional tennis after this year's US Open.
Isner, who 13 years ago at Wimbledon defeated Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (9), 7-6 (3), 70-68 in an 11-hour epic match that lasted three days, confirmed his retirement on social media.
"After more than 17 years on the ATP Tour, it's time to say goodbye to professional tennis. The US Open will be my final tournament.
This transition won't be easy, but I'm looking forward to every second with my beautiful family," Isner, who has four young children with his wife Maddie, wrote on Twitter.

Thirty-eight-year-old Isner was a quarter-finalist at the US Open in 2011 and 2018 in Flushing Meadows.
He is the best server in ATP Tour history with 14,411 aces, and was the highest-ranked American at the end of the year for nine consecutive years from 2012 to 2020, finishing in the top 20 in the world rankings for a decade - from 2010 to 2019, reports Hina.
He won 16 ATP singles titles and eight in doubles. As a representative of the USA, he was a regular participant in the Davis Cup, achieving 15 singles victories and two in doubles in 18 appearances.
However, he is undoubtedly best remembered for his epic showdown with Mahut at Wimbledon. In that match, Isner served a record 113 aces and finished it with an incredible 138 games in the fifth set.
"Those numbers stick with me. It's a basketball score - 70-68. It always reminds me of that. I'll never forget those two numbers as long as I live. It's just crazy," Isner said years later in an interview.
