The extraction of lithium ore on Majevica above the municipality of Lopare is an increasingly intriguing story in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which for some reason is not yet being discussed as much as it should be.
While the media report that the Swiss company “Ar Core” is behind it all, and that businessmen from Germany, Slovenia, and Slovakia are also involved in this business, NSRS deputy Nebojša Vukanović claims that it is all a smokescreen.
Vukanović tells Patria in a brief conversation: “I received information from confidential sources that the Americans and Milorad Dodik have reached an agreement. The Americans are behind the company and the names being mentioned, through off-shore accounts”.
The Swiss company “Ar Core” has released a promotional film “Lopare Project” in which they say: “The Lopare Project is a borate exploration project with significant resource potential of 750 tons of crude, with an estimated value of around 10 billion dollars in potential revenue. We have positive expectations from the project. We have estimated that there are up to ten million tons of borate and one million tons of lithium at this location”.
Scientific advisor at the Technical Institute in Bijeljina, Neđo Đurić, recently told BN that after the research data is sold on the London Stock Exchange, interested companies could come to mine lithium.
It is interesting that everything about this project is shrouded in secrecy, so neither the domestic expert public nor the local community, whose lives would become almost impossible if lithium were to be mined on Majevica, are included in the story.
Therefore, the impact of lithium mining on the environment, the survival of people and animals, flora and fauna is extremely large and poses a real danger.
Among these consequences is the enormous consumption of large quantities of water, which can lead to drought, pollution, and reduced availability of water for drinking and use near the area where the extraction is taking place.
No, the defense of biodiversity and normal living conditions for all who live near the potential lithium mining site is primarily the responsibility of the local community, which should take an example from Loznica in Serbia and raise its voice. The rest of the country must support them, just as the majority of Serbia supported Loznica. Because, life after lithium is almost impossible.
Pro-state and pro-patriotic politics must be involved in the entire story, which must react to this problem in the same way as to the problem of nuclear waste disposal in Trgovska gora in Croatia, which would endanger the population in the Una basin.
Especially if Vukanović's information is true. If American businessmen are behind the whole story and an agreement has been reached with Milorad Dodik, then the story is much more complex. Given the silent American observation of Dodik's destructive campaigns against the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the political forces in Sarajevo have an even greater obligation to resist the pollution of Bosnia and Herzegovina with lithium mining.
This would be a doubly good move. On the one hand, they would defend all citizens of this country from the dangers of lithium mining, and on the other hand, they would deny American support to Dodik's secessionism.
The lithium story is therefore ecological, political, and economic. Bosnia and Herzegovina as a state, as well as the local communities at the foot of Majevica, would not profit from allowing lithium mining. Those who steal our ores would profit, who, for their own profit, would destroy drinking water sources, as well as habitats for plant and animal life.
Milorad Dodik would also profit, because in businessmen hidden behind off-shore accounts and European companies, he would have support for his political activities.
Bosnia and Herzegovina would lose in every respect.
Therefore, it is inevitable that Sarajevo wakes up and looks at the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina, because if it continues to sleep, one day Dodik will wake them up with a pickaxe over his shoulder. A pickaxe with which he will dig up lithium, permanently burying the statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
And everything he has done so far to destroy the state without consequences shows that there is some secret connection between him and the Americans. Is American passivity towards Dodik perhaps paid for with the “oil of the 21st century”, and is the fate of Bosnia and Herzegovina dependent only on how willing Sarajevo is to wake up and act.
