Temporary BiH Armed Forces unit continues to provide assistance in mitigating flood consequences in Slovenia

(Patria) - A temporary unit of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, engaged since August 14, 2023, in a humanitarian mission to assist the civil authorities of the Republic of Slovenia, has continued its activities on the rehabilitation of the Meža Riverbed in the Prevalje municipality area.

Members of the Temporary Unit of the BiH Armed Forces (JPS OS BiH), led by Lieutenant Nemanja Avram, are actively sharing their extensive experience in engineering works with representatives of the local community and other participants in the humanitarian operation to prevent, mitigate, alleviate, and repair the consequences of floods in the endangered area.

During the recent catastrophic floods that hit the Republic of Slovenia, the Meža River overflowed and flooded agricultural land in Poljane, Prevalje municipality. Favorable weather conditions have enabled work for members of all contingents participating in the humanitarian mission in the endangered area.

The engineering unit of the BiH Armed Forces worked on arranging the Meža Riverbed from August 14 to 20, narrowing the riverbed and returning it to its previous course, covering a total area of 30,000 m2. Approximately 1000 m of the riverbed was cleaned, and about 13,000 m3 of gravel was placed in the flooded area, covering 12,000 m2.

In the coming days, the BiH Armed Forces unit will continue its activities in the engagement area, moving towards the settlement of Prevalje, with the expectation that weather conditions will allow the BiH Armed Forces members to continue their activities on the rehabilitation of endangered areas in the Republic of Slovenia.
