(Patria) - Jean-Claude Juncker warned of the danger threatening the European Union, which consists of Europeans having, as he says, 'lost their collective libido' for each other.
Referring to the confusion caused in Great Britain, but also in the EU, by Brexit, Juncker explains that this happened because in Great Britain – the EU, which he called 'young' – was 'systematically insulted' from the very beginning, only to be 'rejected' in the end.
Juncker's analysis of the situation in Europe comes a few days before the leaders' summit, which will discuss the future of the bloc in the Romanian city of Sibiu.
Juncker, who is preparing to leave the position of President of the European Commission in November, claims that during his term, the EU dealt with 'big things' while maintaining 'modesty when it comes to small things', agencies report.
He also concluded that the rise of 'eurosceptic' parties is a bad sign for Europe.
'We don't love each other, we have lost our collective libido... Five or six years after World War II, it was still there. It should be much easier for Europeans to fall in love with each other now than it was in 1952,' Juncker explained.
He also referred to Brexit, calling it a 'special case'.
- If you bombard a nation with messages for 40 years that it doesn't actually belong in the EU, then the decision to leave is logical, Juncker explains the atmosphere and politics that preceded Brexit.
The former Prime Minister of Luxembourg also told the German newspaper Handelsblatt that 'it is not fair for European citizens to attribute every failure of European democracy to Brussels'.
- The European Commission works as best it can. But it cannot solve every problem. The Commission cannot compensate for the weaknesses of national governments and democracies in Europe. Look at Great Britain, he explained in an interview with this German newspaper, adding that 'the fact that the government and the opposition have started talking to each other three years after the Brexit referendum is hardly an indicator of the strength of British democracy'.
