(Patria) - The Institute for Genocide Research Canada (IGK) proposes that the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopt a resolution on the International White Ribbon Day.
Namely, at a recent meeting between IGK representatives and Canada's Minister of International Development Ahmed Husein, it was emphasized that the minister clearly stated that genocide was committed in Prijedor, symbolized by May 31, which is marked as White Ribbon Day.
The IGK recalls that the International Criminal Tribunal for the Prosecution of Persons Responsible for Serious Violations of International Humanitarian Law Committed in the Territory of the Former Yugoslavia, in its partial verdict against Slobodan Milošević of June 16, 2004, established a joint criminal enterprise that included members of the Bosnian Serb leadership, whose goal and intent were to partially destroy Bosnian Muslims as a group, and that its participants committed genocide in Brčko, Prijedor, Sanski Most, Srebrenica, Bijeljina, Ključ, and Bosanski Novi.
They also recall that the House of Representatives of the Missouri State Assembly adopted a Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica and Prijedor, proposed by sponsors, Assembly members Vicky Englundun and Scott Sifton.
The fundamental significance of this resolution lies in the fact that, for the first time in a resolution, the crime in Prijedor is called genocide.
"The adoption of the resolution on the International White Ribbon Day in the United Nations General Assembly is important for the survivors and victims, and declaring May 31 as the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Crimes in Prijedor sends a message to the entire world that the crime in Prijedor must never be repeated. Such a resolution would be a step forward in including the terrible crimes in Prijedor, which science characterizes as genocide, in the world's culture of remembrance. The crime in Prijedor must not remain just a footnote in history. We must protect the dignity of the murdered citizens of Prijedor. We owe that to the victims of Prijedor," they stated.
