Hodžić for NAP: Only recycled medical waste can go to Uborak, anything else is a violation of the law

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Two trucks with waste from the South Camp Hospital were brought to the Mostar landfill Uborak this morning, one truck managed to enter, while the second truck was turned back by citizens because it contained medical waste.

“The inspection was contacted and additional supervision was requested, because the waste from the first truck must also be sorted before disposal at the landfill, and it is questionable whether this will actually be done. The South Camp Hospital, like the Bijeli Brijeg hospital, has procured special bins for sorting and disposing of medical waste. We hope they are following the procedures and disposing of medical waste according to procedures. That type of waste cannot be disposed of at Uborak,” the statement from the group of citizens trying to stop the transport of medical waste to Uborak reads.

Nijaz Hodžić told the Patria Agency that medical waste can be brought to Uborak, but only if it has undergone all procedures.

“Waste that has undergone processing and sterilization can be brought to Uborak. We do not allow waste that has been stored for 45 days to be brought. Everything is connected in that waste, from needles, catheters to infusion bags. We will not allow such waste. This morning, one truck entered because we didn't know in time, and the other was turned back,” says Hodžić.

He adds that they have organized themselves “so that no one can do anything ‘on the sly’ anymore.”

“They must adhere to the law and rules. Both the landfill and the healthcare institution that attempts to do this will be held responsible,” Hodžić stated, writes Patria.
