City Hero: 28 Years Since the Death of Mustafa Hajrulahović Talijan

(Patria) - In the courtyard of Alipašina Mosque, the 28th anniversary of the death of General Mustafa Hajrulahović Talijan was marked today in the presence of family members, comrades-in-arms, and numerous guests.

During the most difficult moments of the siege of Sarajevo, General Hajrulahović demonstrated exceptional organizational and command skills. Under his leadership, the First Corps became a key pillar of the capital's defense, despite daily shelling, shortages, and extremely difficult wartime conditions. The Minister for Veterans' Affairs of Sarajevo Canton, Omer Osmanović, laid flowers today and paid tribute to the man whose bravery indebted the city of Sarajevo.

“Today, as we mark the anniversary of his death, the memory of Mustafa Hajrulahović Talijan is not just a historical obligation. It is a reminder of a time when the character and courage of individuals were crucial for the fate of the entire city. In the collective memory of Sarajevo, he remains a general who bore the burden of responsibility at a time when decisions meant the difference between hope and despair,” was the message from today's commemoration.

Mustafa Hajrulahović was born in Banja Luka on January 22, 1957, where he completed high school. After graduating with excellent grades from the Naval Military Academy in Split, he completed training as a naval saboteur, becoming an expert in sabotage at sea and on land.

He left the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) in 1991 with the rank of Corvette Captain and joined the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Talijan was a member of the Patriotic League, a defender of the city of Sarajevo, even before the first aggressor barricades.

The legendary Sarajevo wartime commander and hero of the defense of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina was only 41 years old when he passed away. He died of a heart attack while visiting his mother in Germany. He was buried in the courtyard of Alipašina Mosque in Sarajevo, where his funeral prayer was held with full honors. He was awarded the Order of the Golden Coat of Arms with Swords.
