Helez failed: Hungarian Major General Laszlo Sticz to take command of EUFOR from January 1, 2024

(Patria) - Hungarian Minister of Defence Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky confirmed today that Major General Laszlo Sticz will take command of the EUFOR Althea mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina from January 1, 2024, and announced the reinforcement of the mission with additional forces during the next year.

The Hungarian Defence Forces are strengthening their commitment: during 2024, additional forces and vital capabilities will join the EUFOR Althea mission. Major General Sticz's experience in developing forces makes him a strong leader for this mission, the Hungarian minister announced on social network X.

As reported by Hungarian media, Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasized that preserving the stability of the Western Balkans is a priority for the Hungarian government, as the countries of the region play a key role in stopping illegal migrations.

He stressed that the Hungarian Armed Forces will contribute to the Althea mission through helicopter transport, air evacuation, and ROLE 1 medical support, as well as with a bomb disposal team, explosive detection dogs, and military police starting next year.

He also added that Hungary has been part of various regional military missions for decades, and the European Union's Althea mission in BiH is one of the more important ones.

According to the Minister of Defence, Hungarian soldiers have been recognized for years for their role in the military alliance by leading regional missions.

Sticz's appointment was supported by the European Union Military Committee as well as the Commander of EUFOR Operation, Hubert Cottereau.
