Hasan Hasanović, who survived the Srebrenica genocide as a 19-year-old, gave a lecture to students at four schools in London, writes the Bosnian news agency Patria.
Hasanović spoke about how he traveled a route over 100 km long across hills and forests in just a few days to reach the safe zone of Tuzla, fleeing the Serbian massacre of more than 8,000 Bosniaks.
In the genocide of July 11, 1995, Hasanović lost his father, brother, and uncle, but managed to reunite with his mother, younger brother, and grandparents.
At Hampton and Waldegrave primary schools, students listened attentively to the harrowing story of the greatest crime in Europe since World War II, as part of the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.
Hasanović said it is of great importance to speak about such crimes to young people.
- It is very important to say that the genocide happened after World War II and that similar things can happen anywhere in the world.
Journalist Ed Vulliamy is one of those who raised awareness about the events in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the aggression. He said he hopes that the black hole in the collective consciousness regarding the brutal war in Bosnia will be filled with the testimonies of survivors, so that it is never forgotten.
Hasan Hasanović graduated from university and today works at the Potočari Memorial Center, where he daily tells visitors about the greatest crime in Europe since World War II.
