(Patria) - Ahead of July 11, the day declared by a resolution of the Canadian Parliament as the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide, Hamilton's historic landmarks were lit green in tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
An electronic billboard in front of Hamilton City Hall read: "July 11 Srebrenica Remembrance Day. We honor the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.” Hamilton's historic electronic landmark was lit in green and white, the colors of the Srebrenica Flower, in honor of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide ahead of July 11. The BiH flag was raised on the flagpole in front of Hamilton City Hall in honor of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
In a message to the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community in Hamilton, Mayor Andrea Horwath wrote:
"On behalf of the City of Hamilton, I express my deepest condolences to the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community in Hamilton, as well as around the world, on July 11, which we commemorate as the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide.
Today we mark the 28th anniversary of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were separated from their families and killed simply for being Muslim. It has never been more important for us to remember these horrific acts of genocide and recommit ourselves to never allowing such crimes to happen again.”
There is only one greater crime than the act of crime itself: it is when the crime is silent. We will not be silent, states the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada (IGK).
