Guterres: We are in the most severe global crisis since World War II

(Patria) – The coronavirus pandemic is the most severe crisis the world has faced since World War II, warned UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

His statement follows the newly released UN report on social and economic changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

- The new coronavirus attacks societies at their core, taking human lives, said Guterres, emphasizing that COVID-19 is 'the greatest test we have faced together since the founding of the United Nations'.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump is warning Americans to prepare for 'two hellishly bad weeks'; namely, the White House estimates that there could be up to 240,000 deaths in the US. In the US, more than 170,000 people have been infected, and more than 3,500 have died.

Trump called compliance with measures 'a matter of life and death' and that this way the country will see 'the light at the end of the tunnel'.

In Europe, two children have died from complications related to coronavirus infection - in Belgium, a 12-year-old girl, and in the UK, a 13-year-old boy.

In all countries, the number of fatal outcomes is rising, most notably in France and Spain.
