Lightning strike kills 57-year-old man in Polača near Biograd

A man whose body was found on Wednesday afternoon in the yard of his family home in Polača was most likely killed by lightning, the Zadar police reported on Thursday, according to the news agency Patria.

On Wednesday around 4 PM in Polača, in the hinterland of Biograd, neighbors found the lifeless body of a 57-year-old man in the yard of his family home and notified emergency services, who in turn called the police.

Criminal investigation and the coroner's findings determined that there were no signs of violence, and since there was a thunderstorm in the area the day before, around 3 PM, it is reasonably suspected that the man died from a lightning strike. He was most likely under an oak tree when the lightning strike killed him at the scene of the accident.

According to data from the Meteorological and Hydrological Service station in Zadar, on Tuesday around 3 PM, a thunderstorm, with very little rain, affected the area from Benkovac to Starigrad Paklenica, and in the hour it lasted, more than a hundred lightning discharges were recorded.
