(Patria) – Elections for a new government began in Greece on Sunday, the sixth time the country has voted in the last ten years.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras proposed early elections on May 26 after his left-wing Syriza party suffered a heavy defeat in the European Parliament elections, with 10 percent fewer votes than the conservative New Democracy party.
That party also won a convincing victory in local and regional elections on the same day.
Voting began at 7:00 a.m., and polling stations will be open until 7:00 p.m.
First results will be announced two hours after voting ends.
