Bosnia and Herzegovina Border Police Investigating How Dodik Crossed State Border on August 21

(Patria) - The BiH Border Police issued a statement regarding media reports about Milorad Dodik crossing the state border on August 21, 2025, at Banja Luka International Airport.

The BiH Border Police states that they are verifying all allegations and available facts regarding this event, in order to establish the factual situation and truthful information.

"In this regard, we inform the public that in accordance with Article 27 of the Rulebook on the Manner of Performing Border Checks and Entering Data into Travel Documents ('Official Gazette of BiH', No. 103/14 and 84/16), it is prescribed that an advance notification for the crossing of the state border by VIP persons must be submitted to the BiH Border Police through diplomatic channels or through the protocol of the competent BiH authority, which is also the sole condition for priority border crossing for a certain person, and therefore the action of the BiH Border Police towards a certain person depends on the content of the said notification.

At the same time, it has been ordered that the Sector for Professional Standards and Internal Control of the BiH Border Police form a case and conduct preliminary checks regarding the actions of police officers of the BiH Border Police in the mentioned case.

In order to provide accurate information to our public, we emphasize that the BiH Border Police operates according to legal and sub-legal regulations and remains persistent in protecting the state border and responsibly undertakes all measures and actions to protect the state border and preserve the security of all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Police officers of the BiH Border Police, when performing border checks on individuals, act in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Border Control and the provisions of the Rulebook on the Manner of Performing Border Checks and Entering Data into Travel Documents, by which they are, among other things, authorized to perform checks in search and other records, which also applies to records kept by other competent authorities.

Data from official records kept by the BiH Border Police based on the Law on Border Control may be used exclusively for the purposes prescribed by Article 2 of the aforementioned law, namely to ensure the inviolability of the state border, protect the life and health of people, prevent and detect criminal offenses and misdemeanors, and detect and find their perpetrators, prevent illegal cross-border migration, and prevent and detect other dangers to public safety, legal order, and national security.

The BiH Border Police acts in all cases of state border crossing in accordance with its competencies and in accordance with the measures ordered by competent authorities.
