Goli Otok Should Be Declared a Memorial Site

The Goli Otok "Ante Zemljar" Association on Tuesday presented its activities aimed at declaring Goli Otok a memorial area and a place of remembrance for all prisoners of the former camp, inviting all relevant social factors to reach a consensus on the realization of this project, reports the Patria News Agency.

- Our goal is not to play into the hands of daily politics, but to commemorate and show respect to the victims, members of the association, founded more than 20 years ago by former inmates and led since last year by a generation of their descendants, said at a press conference.

In order to preserve the memory and pay worthy respect to the victims, our goal is, said the President of the Association Darko Bavoljak, to establish a public institution on Goli Otok, which is visited by over 100,000 visitors annually, that would manage the memorial area. This institution would have an informative and educational role, prevent further devastation, and enable the future sustainable development of the island, based on the culture of remembrance and ecological tourism, writes Index.
