A year has passed since the tragedy in the Raspotočje pit of the Zenica Brown Coal Mine, where five miners died on September 4, reports the Patria news agency.
After a mountain bump in Zenica, 34 miners were trapped in the pit at a depth of several hundred meters. Rescue teams managed to extract 29 of them, but unfortunately there was no salvation for five miners.
The miners who lost their lives were Fejzo Isaković, Mehemed Dizdarević, Mehmedalija Halilović, Fahir Halač, and Hajrudin Bradarac.
The Raspotočje pit is the deepest mine in Bosnia and Herzegovina, often hit by mountain bumps. The industrial city of Zenica itself was known in the former Yugoslavia as a place where severe mining accidents occurred.
On May 12, 1982, 39 miners from the third shift also perished in Raspotočje.
Miners' lives in Zenica, as well as in most other mines in Bosnia and Herzegovina, have been particularly endangered in recent years, after politics began to manage the mines instead of experts.
The five Zenica miners, among the latest victims, left behind minor children, wives, and parents, reports Patria.
