(Patria) - Under the slogan “When the world is silent, we raise anchor”, a flotilla of ships with humanitarian aid and activists, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, will set sail today from Barcelona with the aim of breaking the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Organizers state that this is the largest attempt to challenge the blockade to date, and ships from Italy and Tunisia will join in the coming days.
UN Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories Francesca Albanese expressed strong support for the flotilla: “Forza Sumud Flotilla: you are moral warriors, while states remain inactive and complicit. Gaza is not alone,” she stated on X.
Among the participants is also a humanitarian from Sarajevo, Boris Vitlačil, who is currently in Italy, preparing to board. Vitlačil called on citizens of BiH to symbolically connect with water – rivers, lakes, or the sea – and share their photos or videos with the Movement to Gaza, as a sign of solidarity.
Organizers state that thousands of Italians are bringing food and basic necessities to the ports, providing strong support to the participants of the mission for peace and freedom. Israel has previously intercepted similar attempts, and activists have often been arrested and deported.
