Victims' Voices: Nevenka Tromp Cannot Speak About Srebrenica in the Name of Justice

(Patria) - Several associations of victims and witnesses of genocide sent an open letter today to the organizers of the international festival of contemporary history – History Fest Sarajevo – expressing strong opposition to the announced participation of Nevenka Tromp, a former associate of the Hague Tribunal and co-author of the controversial NIOD report from 2002.

The letter, signed by the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide, the Movement "Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Žepa", the Association "Žena Podrinja", the Association of Mothers of Srebrenica, and the Association of Women of Srebrenica, states that Nevenka Tromp's presence and her lecture on the genocide in Srebrenica would constitute an "insult to the victims of genocide" and a "direct affirmation of a report used for denial and revisionist purposes".

The controversial NIOD report, commissioned by the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with the aim of determining the role of the Dutch battalion "Dutchbat" during the fall of the UN protected zone of Srebrenica, according to the associations, disputes the term "genocide" and does not link Serbia and its then political leadership to the committed crime.

"Nevenka Tromp has never publicly distanced herself from that report. It is still used by the authorities of the Republika Srpska entity and convicted war criminals as an argument in denying the genocide, and it represents a serious blow to truth and justice," the statement reads.

The associations called on the organizing committee of the History Fest, as well as all its partners, donors, and sponsors, to urgently revise the decision on her participation and cancel the announced lecture.

"Her presence at this event, which is being held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the genocide, would be an act of disrespect towards the victims and the families of the murdered, and would place the organizers alongside those who are trying to diminish and relativize the crimes," the associations state.

The organizers of the History Fest have not yet commented on this request.
