MOSCOW, (Patria) - Former world chess champion and Russian opposition politician Garry Kasparov has called for a diplomatic boycott of the World Cup in football, which is being held in Russia this summer, reports the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
- Let's deny Putin the glory he cares so much about by keeping Western diplomats away from the World Cup - Kasparov demanded in an interview with Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung, reports BHRT.
The former world chess champion believes that international sporting events like this, with the presence of world leaders, give Putin legitimacy for his expansionist and aggressive policy.
- Putin occupied Crimea at a time when he was still encouraged by the Olympic Games in Sochi. If we deny Putin such a boost and confidence boost at the World Cup, it will not be just a symbolic act. It will let Putin know that the world is awake and that Russian attacks will only be tolerated on the sports field in the future - said Kasparov.
Currently, Great Britain and Iceland, due to the attack on former agent Sergei Skripal in London, have announced that they will not send diplomats to the World Cup matches in Russia, and Australia is also considering such a move.
Kasparov added that as an athlete, he is against boycotting the championship itself, but that he is fully in favour of a "regime boycott".
