Franjo Šarčević, a professor at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics of UNSA, has been in the public spotlight these days, as many, including the well-informed, have realized that Šarčević is actually a philosopher from Ivo Komšić's partisan school. Some even stated in their reactions that it is unacceptable for Šarčević to be a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, even though he is at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics. However, if we consider the broader context of Šarčević's work, it is clear that he is more of a philosopher than a mathematician:
In his scientific work, he is not even average, constantly a victim of local liberals on the financial payroll of Western organizations. In the Web of Science database, two of his papers are relevant. Furthermore, Šarčević's modest scientific profile is also shown by the fact that the University of Sarajevo awards prizes for science every year. Among the candidates for awards are up to 200 scientists, and all have far better results than Šarčević's. According to scientific output, he is far below average even for UNSA. This is shown by the UNSA report on work from 2020. The University published 393 papers in the Web of Science database, and 22 in mathematics. Šarčević has two such papers in his career so far. From the above, it can undoubtedly be concluded that Šarčević's job, for which taxpayers pay him, is a secondary activity, and his main job is acting according to the matrix of Ivo Komšić and like-minded individuals, a trusted person for murky academic affairs for Christian Schmidt.
We asked the Faculty of Science and Mathematics for their stance on Šarčević's attack on the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and whether there is a Code of Conduct for the advertising of PMF employees, given the previous publications of their employee. We provided the Faculty of Science and Mathematics with publications in which Šarčević curses a member of the Presidency, and insults and mocks the signatory of these lines, as well as other individuals who say things in public that Šarčević does not like.
This is the response from the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Nusret Drešković:
“In accordance with your inquiry, I wish to inform you that the members of the University of Sarajevo do not have individual acts on a code of conduct for employees' advertising. Article 25 of the Code of Ethics of the University of Sarajevo explains in more detail the public appearances of members of the academic staff of the University. In accordance with the stated article, I wish to inform you that, in addition to the Rector of UNSA, only the deans of the faculties are authorized to present the official positions of the institution they represent in public. Public appearances of members of the university academic community represent exclusively their personal views and do not reflect the official positions of the University/Faculty.”
Therefore, the Faculty of Science and Mathematics and the dean of that faculty have distanced themselves from Franjo Šarčević's views. As far as I know, an initiative will be submitted to the KS Assembly in the coming period for UNSA to provide a statement and for legal action, given that Šarčević called Independence Day meaningless and attacked the official symbols of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose successor is the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Who is Šarčević then, if he is not the mathematician he presents himself as: In short, the views that Šarčević expresses in public appearances and texts on his portal Prometej are the philosophical product of Ivo Komšić's school through the vision of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a liberal state free from any influence of Bosniaks (mostly Muslims). Therefore, according to the school of Ivo Komšić, Slave Kukić, and the student Franjo Šarčević, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a state in which Muslims (mostly Bosniaks) should live in rural areas and engage in agricultural work without the right to political organization and action.
And in this thesis lies the basic premise of the actions of Šarčević, as well as Komšić, Kukić, Papić, Kazaz, and others. That is why Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for which Croats and Serbs voted, but which was defended primarily by Bosniaks, paying a huge price with the most valuable commodity – their own lives, is bothersome. To achieve the Bosnia that Ivo Komšić dreams of, and Franjo Šarčević advocates, it is necessary to suppress the nurturing of the achievements of the defense-liberation struggle for an independent Bosnia, which Independence Day essentially is.
That is why Šarčević is bothered by that boy in uniform with the insignia of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. And the school of Ivo Komšić, considering the past history of Muslims and their forgetfulness, counts on the possibility of making them dislike this struggle, presenting it as anti-modern and fascist. Šarčević is not bothered by a boy in the uniform of the Croatian Army marching in Vukovar with the Croatian flag. He is not bothered by similar examples throughout the Western world, which he loves so much, but he is bothered by a Bosniak child in the uniform of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially since the mayor of Sarajevo embraced that child.
Another possibility that Šarčević and the core of Ivo Komšić's school are counting on is that Our Party becomes a dominant political entity. Because it is known that Our Party has publicly renounced Bosniak identity as the key guardian of both the achievements and independence. On the other hand, this liberal option, which Šarčević accepts as his closest political bloc, is against everything that is valuable to Bosniaks through its dual action, and for everything that is acceptable according to Western standards, including Croatia and Čović's HDZ. Although he is closest to Our Party, and often criticizes HDZ, Šarčević still sees nothing wrong with the absolutely problematic coalition of these two concepts.
And when we know that the key points for Šarčević and Ivo Komšić's school are the destruction of the achievements of independence and the liberation war, and then Our Party, their consternation with Željko Komšić and anyone else who advocates for a Bosnian nation and Bosnia as a sovereign and indivisible state is absolutely clear.
That is why Šarčević, like Komšić, Kukić, Papić… continuously attacks in multiple directions the attempt to establish a civic state, like most EU countries, because in such a development of the situation, the projects of oppressing Bosniaks as the majority nation by the political fist of Serb-Croatian politics would not work. And for that reason, both Ivo Komšić and Franjo Šarčević have simultaneously thanked Schmidt for imposing electoral solutions in which HDZ is a constant, and the Bosniak vote is devalued to the lowest minimum.
And when it was said that what Schmidt is doing has the characteristics of apartheid, Šarčević appeared to explain to us. “It is shocking how irresponsibly serious terms are used. Apartheid is a crime that was systematically carried out in the territories of the Republic of South Africa, and that policy involved the complete exclusion of the majority black population from public life (...) To claim that anything in BiH is apartheid is not only untrue, but also unethical towards people who were truly victims of apartheid,” said Professor Franjo Šarčević at the second edition of the “Sarajevo Debates” titled “Did Christian Schmidt Introduce Apartheid in BiH”.
Therefore, Šarčević clearly sees apartheid where the black population is excluded from public life, but it is not apartheid for him when a quarter of a million Bosniak votes (electoral will) are excluded from the political system by the decision of representatives of the international community.
Because, for Šarčević, a civic state is what Elmedin Konaković and Our Party represent, for whom he says: “It should be said, however, that not every advocacy for a ‘civic state’ is identical to this represented by SDA-DF, which is a code for the national domination of the majority. There are some people, it can even be said for one party called Our Party, who understand something under this term around which we could, at least largely, agree... But to fight against a ‘civic BiH’ built in accordance with the principles and practice of Željko Komšić and Bakir Izetbegović is simply a matter of upbringing.”
Undoubtedly, Šarčević has no problem with the concept of states like Croatia, Germany, France… in which the majority is dominant, but he has a problem with Bosnia and Herzegovina, in which, unfortunately for it, Muslims are the majority.
That is why Elmedin Konaković, who does not dare to state judicially proven facts about Croatia's aggression against BiH and the UZP, is also acceptable to Šarčević, so Šarčević says about the president of NiP:
“Objectivity does not require saying that all politicians are the same, because that would be precisely untrue and unobjective. No. There are normal people with whom it is possible to imagine the future, like Dino Konaković, and there are dark figures with whom it is impossible to imagine any future, like Željko Komšić.”
And I think it is unnecessary to further explain that Šarčević shares the same line of thinking as Ivo Komšić, who disrupted the attempt by the academic community to form a Bosnian parliament.
What I must emphasize at the end are two observations from platform X on Šarčević's profile. Namely, before he turned the message that someone would come to his faculty and leave him without a job into a major threat in the Balija media, Šarčević announced that he was learning foreign languages, and earlier on January 1st, he said: “With the hope that Prometej will have something to swim with this year as well, we present the ten most read articles.”
Obviously, the financial tentacles of the West have begun to dry up, so Šarčević realized that he might learn a language and leave to seek his fortune elsewhere. And in such cases, the best spice is the story of threats from a Mujahideen Sarajevo, while life abroad also offers an opportunity to continue the fight in the partisan uniform of Ivo Komšić. Because he will obviously not engage in mathematics, just as he is not doing so now!
