French capital in chaos after PSG's Champions League triumph

(Patria) - Paris police detained 45 people after violence interrupted the celebration of Paris Saint-Germain's second Champions League title on Saturday evening, with one group attempting to break into a police station in the French capital, AP reported.

Fans began celebrating in Paris after the final whistle earlier that evening in Budapest, Hungary, where PSG beat English side Arsenal on penalties in a dramatic final.

Dozens of fans marched along avenues near the Arc de Triomphe, with some setting off flares and honking car horns.

Around 20,000 people gathered on the Champs-Élysées, and police worked to contain the crowd.

However, the Paris police prefecture said smaller groups caused riots at various locations, with some vandalising shops and setting fires.

One police officer was injured.

Those who attempted to break into the police station in the upscale 8th arrondissement were dispersed, police said.

It was stated that 45 people had been detained by 10 p.m.

The main ring road around Paris was briefly blocked by a crowd before police dispersed them. Police also said a bakery and a restaurant were damaged.

Officers also contained around 1,000 people gathered near PSG's stadium in the 16th arrondissement and removed barricades made of bicycles.

In May last year, when police made more than 500 arrests across France after PSG won their first title, Paris was on high alert, with 8,000 police officers deployed across the city.
