(Patria) – Elections for the European Parliament are underway, considered historically significant as they will determine the future of Europe in the context of the rapid rise of right-wing populism, which is seen as a threat to the traditional social democratic values of the Old Continent.
Member states of the European Union are electing a total of 751 members of parliament who will represent them in Brussels and Strasbourg for a five-year term.
The results of the vote in Great Britain on Thursday will be announced on Sunday. On Saturday, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Slovakia and Malta vote, while the rest of the EU will vote on Sunday.
We remind you that in the Netherlands, the Labour Party of Frans Timmermans won the most votes, surprising many given the party's result in the previous elections in 2014. Timmermans is otherwise mentioned as a possible candidate for the top EU position after the departure of Jean-Claude Juncker. The victory of his party will likely 'clear' the path to a new position for this social democrat.
In Ireland, the Green Party won the most votes, Patria reports.
