EU bans import of chicken meat from BiH, poultry farmers already counting huge losses

(Patria) - The export of chicken meat from Bosnia and Herzegovina to European Union countries has been temporarily suspended, confirmed the Poultry Farmers Association of the Federation of BiH.

As we were told, the ban followed the outbreak of bird flu on a poultry farm in the settlement of Karanovac, in the municipality of Petrovo.

It was also emphasized that this measure was introduced at the end of February and has already caused significant problems for domestic producers.

Accordingly, the measure resulted in a large quantity of meat remaining on the domestic market.

In order to avoid a bigger problem, poultry farmers are trying to find alternative solutions, so they are placing some of the meat on the domestic market, while freezing certain quantities so that they can be exported again later.

An important fact is that the border with Serbia is not closed, which actually allows producers to continue a certain part of meat exports. It was also stated that the largest quantity of chicken is exported to neighboring Croatia.

This export restriction should last about 30 days in the best-case scenario, poultry farmers tell us, adding that they expect the measure to end sometime in early April, given that it has been in effect since the end of February.
