(Patria) – The European Union is consolidating additional financial support to help its member states cope with the consequences of the closure of cities, countries and – workplaces.
With a new package of 100 billion euros, the EU will help citizens who have lost their jobs, as well as companies that were forced to close their doors due to the general economic downturn.
European Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen said that the new support package will 'mitigate the negative effect of the recession, keep people in jobs, help companies return to the market with renewed vigour'.
The aid scheme, called Support to mitigate Unemployment Risks in an Emergency (SURE), covers all EU member states that need and request assistance, and assumes that all members will guarantee the proper use of the fund.
The European Trade Union Confederation welcomed the announcement of aid, but stressed that it must cover all EU member states, as well as self-employed workers.
In the EU, more than a million people have lost their jobs in the past two weeks.
