Ashton: EU will increase engagement, but the key lies with leaders

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, who visited Bosnia and Herzegovina today, said she considered it important to come and talk with civil society as well.

- The European Union is fully committed to you and the European perspective. We want to see a united, stable, and prosperous BiH. We are determined to stand by the citizens. They have clearly expressed their opinion. They want to be employed, they want economic stability and an efficient justice system – Ashton told reporters.

She further noted that the key lies with BiH leaders.

- To meet these expectations, leaders need to overcome ethnic divisions and address these issues, economic reform, trade promotion, the rule of law, and human rights protection. The legitimate concerns of citizens have been clearly heard in EU capitals. They should be heard and seen in BiH. Violence is unacceptable, but urgent action is needed – Ashton added.

Ashton also emphasized that BiH is lagging far behind its neighbors, and that the will of its leaders is crucial.

- I call on political leaders to listen, take responsibility, and do so immediately. I guarantee you that the EU will support all efforts by leaders that will bring prosperity to BiH citizens. The EU has invested significant efforts to help BiH. In the coming days, I will hold meetings on BiH with EU member states. We must help you and we are considering greater engagement, but the greatest responsibility lies with the politicians of this country. It is an honor to visit this beautiful country, and I want it to succeed. But success begins at home – Ashton added.
