(Patria) – A tourist lost his life during a volcanic eruption on the island of Stromboli in southern Italy.
The island is otherwise a popular tourist destination in the Mediterranean Sea precisely because of the volcano; tourists climb to the top of the volcano, which is over 900 m high, to see the crater that continuously ejects pieces of lava into the air.
When they saw a cloud of smoke and ash rising from the volcano, the tourists panicked and sought refuge in the sea.
Stromboli has been erupting since the earliest historical records. The ancient Romans called it the 'Lighthouse of the Mediterranean'. The local population calls it 'iddu', which means 'he/it' in the local dialect.
A film starring Ingrid Bergman was shot on the island in 1950, and it has long been a favorite destination for the rich and famous, writes Euronews.
