Emirates Global Aluminium: Full production recovery after Iranian attack could take a year

(Patria) - Emirates Global Aluminium announced that the full recovery of primary aluminium production at the Al Taweelah smelter in the United Arab Emirates, which was hit by an Iranian attack late last month, could take up to a year, Reuters reported.

The Al Taweelah facilities were completely evacuated and entered a state of emergency following the March 28 attack on the Khalifa Economic Zone in Abu Dhabi, the company said in a statement.
"To resume operations at the smelter, EGA must repair the damage to the infrastructure and gradually restore each of the reduction cells," EGA stated.
"Preliminary indicators suggest that the full recovery of primary aluminium production could take up to twelve months."

EGA stated that the Al Taweelah refinery, which produces alumina, the raw ingredient for aluminium, and the Al Taweelah recycling facility might restart some production earlier, "depending on the final assessment of the damage at the site".

Concerns about the impact of the conflict in the Middle East on supply led to the largest monthly increase in aluminium prices in nearly two years in March.
The benchmark three-month aluminium CMAL3 on the London Metal Exchange rose by 10.4 percent during the month and reached its highest price in almost four years - $3,546.50 per metric ton - on March 12.

Aluminium producers in the Persian Gulf, which typically account for about nine percent of global supply, have been unable to deliver metal to world markets through their usual channels since the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz shipping lane following US-Israeli attacks on Iran that began on February 28.

EGA's Al Taweelah aluminium smelter produced 1.6 million tons of cast metal in 2025.

The company also has a neighbouring alumina refinery in Al Taweelah, which produced 2.4 million tons of aluminium raw material last year.
