EC: No problems in gas supply, alternative routes secured

(Patria) - European gas infrastructure is flexible, supply is secured via alternative routes through Germany and Italy, as well as by withdrawals from storage, the European Commission (EC) said.

The EC Directorate-General for Energy, on the occasion of the expiry of the agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, announced that the EC and member states confirm that there are no problems in gas supply in the new year.

At an extraordinary meeting of the Gas Coordination Group, the Commission and member states from Central and Eastern Europe assessed the situation and confirmed that, thanks to effective preparations and coordination in the region and beyond, there are no concerns regarding security of supply.

"Gas supply is secured via alternative routes (Germany, Italy) and by withdrawals from storage. European gas infrastructure is flexible and adapted to receive gas that is not of Russian origin," the statement said.

Also, the Directorate added, since 2022, new capacities for importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) have been significantly strengthened.

"Storage levels of 72 percent are slightly above the average (69 percent) for this time of year.

The Commission maintains regular monitoring and communication with member states and market participants, in order to ensure security of supply for the most affected member states and prevent speculation," the statement concludes.
