ST. GEORGE'S DAY Roma bathed in spring water and cast away negativity

(Patria) - St. George's Day once marked the time when Roma would set off with their caravans, today it is a holiday full of symbolism. Roma in Bosnia and Herzegovina are celebrating their biggest holiday - St. George's Day. With a series of rituals, they bid farewell to winter and welcome spring. Every year on May 6th, Roma celebrate their traditional holiday St. George's Day, which is considered the day of spring and summer, a day when life and nature are celebrated.

On this occasion, spring water is brought in, into which eggs, flowers, and young willow branches are dipped, used for morning bathing and washing. It is believed that this act casts away the negativity that occurred in the past year. The photo gallery shows pictures of Roma from Visoko who went for water to Ravne last night.

After the ritual bathing, special festive attire is worn, jewelry is put on, Roma music is played, and the Roma kolo (circle dance) is danced. Usually, lamb is eaten on this day because Roma believe that lamb liver on this day has magical powers for children and household members, as it brings life and joy into the home.
