Communist militants have detained the chief prosecutor in a courthouse in Istanbul during an investigation into the death of a teenager during anti-government protests, reports the Patria news agency.
The kidnappers are believed to belong to the banned Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP-C), and they have also released photographs of the detained chief prosecutor, with a masked man holding a pistol to his head.
Kiraz also had a blindfold placed over his mouth. The detained chief prosecutor is Mehmet Selim Kiraz, and the flag of this banned group in Turkey can be seen in the background, reports the Independent.
The Dogan news agency reported that shots were heard in the courthouse at the time of prosecutor Kiraz's abduction, that the building was evacuated, and that special forces units entered it.
The militants have demanded that Kiraz publicly reveal the identity of the police officers responsible for the death of teenager Berkin Elvan (15) or they will kill him. In the demand, they stated that they want a "live confession" from the responsible police officers.
