Dr. Nermir Granov led the KCUS team that performed the first heart transplant in BiH, organ explanted at Zenica Hospital!

(Patria) - The public institution Cantonal Hospital Zenica successfully performed a new organ explantation from a brain-dead donor on Sunday, this time a 21-year-old whose brain death was diagnosed on August 3, which resulted in the first heart transplant in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As stated on the official website of the Zenica hospital, after brain death was confirmed, in accordance with legal procedures, a conversation was held with the family of the deceased patient regarding organ donation.

- Thanks to the family who agreed to organ donation, a multi-organ explantation was performed. The multi-organ explantation was carried out in cooperation with medical teams from the Clinical Center University of Sarajevo and Cantonal Hospital Zenica, led by transplant coordinator Senad Čaušević, MSc in Biomedical Sciences, and deputy coordinator Nermina Rizvanović, MD, PhD. The heart and both kidneys were explanted. The postoperative course of the transplanted patients is currently proceeding normally - the Zenica Hospital stated.

The heart transplant, which was performed for the first time in our country, was carried out by a team of doctors from the Clinical Center University of Sarajevo, led by Prof. Dr. Nermir Granov, while the kidneys were transplanted at the Urology Clinic of the Clinical Center University of Sarajevo, under the leadership of Dr. Osman Hadžiosmanović.

- The management of the Cantonal Hospital Zenica expresses respect and gratitude to the donor's family for their humanity, who saved three lives by their consent, as well as gratitude to the medical team of the Cantonal Hospital Zenica and the Clinical Center University of Sarajevo, who, in a professional manner and in accordance with the principles of medical ethics, successfully participated in the execution of the explantation procedure of the donated organs - the Zenica Hospital emphasized. They also expressed gratitude for the support to the Ministry of Interior of the Zenica-Doboj Canton.

The Zenica Hospital recently, on June 29, performed an explantation of donated organs and tissues from a 40-year-old patient, who was also declared brain dead, and whose family gave consent for organ donation.

At that time, the organs were directed to the Clinical Center University of Sarajevo and to the University Clinical Center Tuzla.
