The world's best tennis player Novak Djokovic admitted today that nine years ago he was offered $200,000 to fix a match at the St. Petersburg tournament, after which he withdrew from the event, reports the Patria news agency.
“No one approached me directly, but through people who were on my team. Of course, we immediately refused. The man wanted to talk to me, but he didn't get to me. Nothing came of it. At that time, there were people talking about it, but I haven't heard anything similar in the last six or seven years,” said Djokovic, as reported by B92.
He said those stories were related to players who are no longer active.
“There is no place for that in our sport. We try to keep it as clean as possible. I think that shadow will not cover tennis; people are just guessing, but there is no evidence. Those are just speculations,” said Djokovic.
The British BBC announced today that it possesses documents proving match-fixing at the biggest tennis tournaments, even at Wimbledon.
