(Patria) - Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the worst is yet to come in the novel coronavirus epidemic.
Ghebreyesus issued a new warning at a time when many countries are beginning to ease restrictive measures introduced to combat the coronavirus.
He did not specify why he believes the epidemic situation could worsen, during which, at least according to official data, nearly 2.5 million people have been infected, with over 168,000 deaths.
"Trust us. The worst is yet to come. Let's prevent this tragedy. Many people still do not understand this virus," Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva.
He stated that such a pandemic happens for the first time in a hundred years and that it resembles the so-called 'Spanish flu' of 1918, which killed up to 100 million people.
"But now we have the technology, we can prevent a catastrophe, we can prevent that kind of crisis," added Ghebreyesus, reports Beta.
