(Patria) - Numerous delegations laid flowers today at the Kazani memorial above Sarajevo and paid tribute to the innocent victims.
The victims were honored by their family members, and the High Representative in BiH Cristian Schmidt, the Vice President of the Federation of BiH Igor Stojanović, while the delegation of the City of Sarajevo was led by Mayor Benjamina Karić.
High Representative Christian Schmidt emphasized that reconciliation requires showing respect for all victims, bringing perpetrators to justice, and collectively committing to building a future where such crimes will never happen again.
The Kazani memorial, dedicated to the murdered citizens of Sarajevo during 1992 and 1993 at the Kazani site, was unveiled in November 2021.
The City Council of Sarajevo previously accepted the proposal of Mayor Karić that November 9th officially become the Day of Remembrance for the victims at Kazani, which is when the exhumation of their remains began.
The remains of 23 victims, 15 of whom have been identified, were recovered from the pit at Kazani after the war through multiple exhumations.
Data from the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina (INO BiH) indicate that these include five female and ten male victims, aged 27 to 66. Two victims were of Ukrainian nationality, two of Croatian nationality, one of Bosniak nationality, and ten of Serbian nationality.
Fourteen members of the Tenth Mountain Brigade of the Army of BiH were convicted for the murders committed at Kazani, as well as for failing to report the crime and the perpetrators during and immediately after the war. The commander of this unit, Mušan Topalović Caco, was killed in Sarajevo on October 26, 1993, during an arrest operation.
