A historic day: Karate to be an Olympic sport from 2020

The 2020 Summer Olympics, after wrestling, boxing, judo, and taekwondo, will get a fifth martial art sport - karate, writes the Patria News Agency.             

The International Olympic Committee decided that the new sports to be featured at the 2020 Tokyo Games are karate, baseball, skateboarding, surfing, and sport climbing. These five sports were proposed by the hosts of the Tokyo Games, and the IOC unanimously approved the proposal.   

In the five new sports, athletes will compete in 18 disciplines, with a total of 474 Olympians, which will increase the number of participants in the Tokyo Games to 11,000, across 33 sports, from the current 10,500 athletes and 28 sports. This historic decision was made yesterday, August 3, at the 129th session of the International Olympic Committee.

Karate will have its Olympic premiere in its homeland - Japan, at the XXXII Olympic Games to be held in 2020 in Tokyo.  

This is the result of years of effort by the World Karate Federation/WKF/ and numerous recognized karatekas who lobbied for this sport worldwide.    

As University Karate Club Bosna Sarajevo and BiH karate belong to the very European and world elite, this will be a new strength and a new impetus for new successes and the first karate Olympic medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
