Statehood Day marked in Nevesinje: We are obliged to preserve what was hard-won!

In Nevesinje on Tuesday, November 25, Statehood Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina was marked with a ceremonial program, during which citizens and representatives of political and social life paid tribute to the victims of the past war.

The central event was held at the memorial in Kljuni, erected as a lasting remembrance of the murdered civilians and fallen soldiers from this region, according to the statement from the event organizers.

After the state anthem was played, delegations from political entities in eastern Herzegovina laid flowers and paid due respect to the victims of the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In his official address, the representative in the Nevesinje Municipal Assembly, Džemal Šendro, recalled the rich and layered history of Bosnian-Herzegovinian statehood, emphasizing that Bosnia and Herzegovina is the oldest South Slavic state, whose roots reach far into history.

"On the path to today's statehood, we have gone through centuries of trials, ages of foreign rule, and then the dramatic years of the breakup of Yugoslavia. In those moments, as the fragile federation crumbled, Bosnia and Herzegovina legally, democratically, and bravely decided to restore its independence," Šendro said.

Speaking about the modern history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, he highlighted the key dates and decisions that led to the restoration of statehood, as well as the high price the country paid during the aggression in the 1990s.

"Statehood Day is not just a date, it is an obligation. An obligation to preserve what was hard-won, to be aware that the Bosnian spirit is strongest when it relies on truth, justice, and unity. It is our obligation to remember that this country survived when few believed it could and that it will survive as long as its people have faith, strength, and dignity," Šendro conveyed.

The marking of Statehood Day in Nevesinje concluded with the message that the history and sacrifice of Bosnia and Herzegovina must be preserved with dignity so that future generations can continue to build a just and united society.
