(Patria) – On July 14, when France celebrates Bastille Day, President Emmanuel Macron spoke about the importance of common defence and security in Europe.
He stressed that this had not been necessary since the Second World War. He also emphasised that building European security together with the Atlantic Alliance is a priority for France.
His message was released as he prepared to host world leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, at the traditional high-tech military parade in Paris.
Just before the end of the parade, clashes broke out between police and the Yellow Vests on Paris's Champs-Elysees.
The demonstrators were not wearing yellow vests but chanted 'Yellow Vests! Macron, we're coming for you!' Some carried banners and yellow balloons while others tried to set up barricades in an attempt to stop traffic. Police were forced to use tear gas.
Bastille Day became France's national day in 1880, and is traditionally celebrated with military parades, speeches, fireworks and parties.
