COVID-19: Numbers rising worldwide, US leads in infections

(Patria) – The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the US surpassed 100,000 on Friday, exceeding China, where the virus originally began to spread, according to statistics from Johns Hopkins University.

However, in terms of the number of deaths, which stands at just over 1,500, they are still behind China, which lost 3,169 of its citizens.

Italy, the most affected European country, registered 6,153 new infections on Thursday alone, bringing the total number of infected people worldwide to over half a million.

France, with 29,155 infected, reported as many as 365 new deaths on Thursday, including a sixteen-year-old girl.

In Spain, 655 new deaths were recorded on Thursday alone, bringing the total number to over 4,100, with a total of 56,000 infected people in the country. Spain has surpassed China in terms of fatalities and, along with Italy, represents the countries that have lost the most citizens in the epidemic.

The number of infected is also rapidly increasing in Germany, now standing at 42,288 with 253 deaths. In a single day, 5,780 new cases were reported, and 55 people died.

On Thursday, 115 people died in Great Britain, bringing the total number to 578.

France has fined more than 225,000 of its citizens for violating the lockdown order.

South Africa has the highest number of cases on the African continent, around 1,000.

Due to job losses, more than 3.2 million Americans have applied for unemployment benefits. President Trump, meanwhile, stated that he wants to 'reopen the country' by Easter to prevent economic collapse. The US is first in the world in terms of infections and third in terms of deaths, with over 1,500 fatalities.
