(Patria) - The legal team of Fadil Novalić - Elmir Jahić and Senad Pećanin issued a statement stating that the Independent Commission for Monitoring Conditions in Institutions, Treatment and Respect for Human Rights of Persons Serving Criminal Sanctions conducted an interview with Fadil
Novalić, who is serving a legal sentence in the State
Prison in Vojkovići.
"The Commission's visit followed a request from Novalić's legal team and after the public was informed that the prison administration is violating Novalić's human rights, i.e., preventing him from having telephone conversations with his lawyers and family, to which he has a legal right, as well as receiving food packages from his family.
The violation of this right was also confirmed by the prison warden himself in a written response to Novalić's lawyers on January 13, 2025, confirming the existence of illegal measures he introduced, including the unlawful wiretapping of Novalić's previous telephone conversations, without prior notification, as required by law," the statement reads.
During the conversation, Commission members informed Novalić that the prison warden is under great pressure.
"However, what they did not disclose is that the said pressure comes from cadres of the ruling 'Trojka' parties who hold positions in the Ministry of Justice of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that the illegal measures imposed are a result of that very pressure.
"Fadil Novalić's legal team is shocked and disappointed by the fact that during the conversation with Novalić, the Commission showed no interest in the obvious discrimination, violation of law and human rights by the prison warden. Instead, Commission members were interested in whether Novalić has ambitions to return to the position of Prime Minister after serving his sentence, and to tell him that some of the people who visited him 'are not his friends.'
During the conversation with the Commission, Novalić emphasized the professionalism and correct attitude of prison staff towards inmates. He particularly stressed that he demands for himself the same rights that all other inmates have, and an immediate cessation of violations of his human rights guaranteed by law and prison rules," Jahić and Pećanin stated.
