(Patria) - This weekend, the fourth annual chestnut festival, ChestNut Fest, was held in Cazin. The goal of this event was to popularize this forest fruit, for which the Cazin region is particularly rich.
A series of appropriate contents were organized in the city center, such as workshops for children, concerts, and performances, and all visitors could enjoy tasting chestnuts prepared in various ways.
On that occasion, the hosts prepared and distributed over a ton of this forest fruit for free. Within the festival, a fair of local products and handicrafts was held, presenting the culture and tradition of the region.
"We are pleased that this event is gaining wider significance every year and that its importance has been recognized by others who have supported its organization. We are proud of our chestnut forests and will do everything to maintain and preserve them; it is the wealth of our region," stated Nermin Ogrešević, Mayor of Cazin.
Also, on this occasion, the famous chestnut honey was presented, which has been produced in this area since ancient times and is branded worldwide as chestnut honey of the Cazin Krajina.
Unlike some previous years, the chestnut harvest this year is very abundant, thanks to favorable weather conditions.
According to the organizers, the long dry period contributed to the cleanliness of the fruits, which are large and juicy, making this year one of the more successful ones.
The Una-Sana Canton area is rich in chestnut forests, which cover over 200,000 hectares of land in this region.
The largest number of such forests are in the areas of Cazin and Bužim, where the collection and sale of these forest fruits are traditionally an important source of income for many families. Also, in the post-war period, large quantities of chestnuts from this area are purchased and exported or processed.
The event also aims to highlight the importance of preserving chestnut forests, given their increasing endangerment due to the spread of infectious diseases and excessive logging. Chestnuts are also a honey-producing tree, and the survival of chestnut forests is of immense importance for beekeeping in this region.
