Czech Republic on refugee quotas: We will soon see that the emperor has no clothes

Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary voted yesterday against accepting mandatory refugee quotas, and the BBC's Europe correspondent notes that it is "highly unusual" for such a serious issue, which encompasses sovereignty, to be decided by a majority rather than a unanimous vote, reports the Patria news agency.

Czech President Milos Zeman said after the vote:

"Only the future will show what a mistake this was", while Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he would not accept the conditions and would not "respect the dictate of the majority".

Czech Interior Minister Milan Chovanec also spoke out on Twitter, writing: "We will soon see that the emperor has no clothes. Today, common sense was defeated."

Radio Prague meanwhile reports that the Czech Republic could challenge the quota decision at the European Court of Justice. A spokesman for the Hungarian government said his country would respect the decision, reports Index.
