The Czech Republic and Slovakia are prepared to open a railway corridor for refugees wishing to travel from Hungary to Germany, provided that Hungary and Germany agree on the procedure concerning them, stated the Czech and Slovak interior ministers, reports the Patria News Agency.
"If Germany publicly promises to accept Syrian refugees registered in some European country and not to return them, and if Hungary and Germany reach an agreement, we are prepared to open the corridor," Czech Minister Milan Chovanec told reporters after a meeting with his Slovak counterpart Robert Kalinak.
These two Central European countries are located on the main route connecting Hungary and Germany. Thousands of refugees, the majority of whom are from Syria, are waiting for an opportunity to leave Hungary for one of the wealthier Western European Union member states.
The prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary are expected to meet late this afternoon (September 4) in Prague. It is expected that they will reiterate their joint opposition to the refugee quotas that the EU is trying to introduce for its member states, writes Index.
