(Patria) - Nothing justifies the killing of children, stated the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees today, amid intensifying Israeli attacks on Gaza.
Recalling that at least 100 children have been killed or injured daily in Gaza since Israeli attacks resumed on March 18, Philippe Lazzarini posted on X that "the continuation of the war is once again stealing childhoods".
"The war has turned the children of Gaza into children without a country," said the UNRWA chief, adding:
"This is a stain on our collective humanity. Nothing justifies the killing of children wherever they are".
Lazzarini reiterated the call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Yesterday's report by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics states that Israel has killed nearly 17,954 children in Gaza since October 7, 2023. The total number includes 274 newborns, 876 infants under one year old, 17 children who froze to death in displacement camps, and 52 children who died from malnutrition.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that he would intensify attacks as efforts continue to implement US President Donald Trump's plan to displace Palestinians from Gaza.
More than 50,600 Palestinians have been killed in the enclave since October 2023, mostly women and children.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over the war in Gaza.
