Bužim ready for 'Freedom Days of the Knightly Town': Honouring heroes, looking to the future

(Patria) - Bužim has completed preparations for the event 'Freedom Days of the Knightly Town of Bužim', which will be held from August 4 to 15. This traditional event is dedicated to preserving the memory of the martyrs and heroes of the defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially Brigadier General Izet Nanić and members of the 505th Knightly Brigade.

– The religious program holds a special place as it nurtures spiritual tradition and reminds us of the sacrifice made by our fighters. The event will begin with a visit to the grave of Izet Nanić, a visit to the Museum of the 505th Knightly Brigade, evening prayer (akšam-namaz), and a Quran Recitation Evening at Alija Izetbegović Square – stated Mehmed Harčević, chief imam of the Bužim Mufti's Office, to the MINA agency.

The attendance of numerous hafizes, Quran reciters, and delegates from the Rais al-Ulama Husein-ef. Kavazović and Bihać Mufti Mehmed-ef. Kudić is expected, who, as Harčević announces, will send a strong message about faith, unity, and respect for sacrifice.

Bužim Mayor Mersudin Nanić emphasizes that the 505th Knightly Brigade is not just a military unit for the people of Bužim, but a symbol of survival, freedom, and identity.

– Without it and without General Nanić, we would not be where we are today. Every project, every child growing up in freedom today, is a continuation of their struggle – Nanić emphasized.

This year's commemoration also carries special symbolism – it marks 30 years since the death of Brigadier General Izet Nanić. Harčević states that his character and work remain a moral compass for Bužim and the entire country.

– He is a symbol of the struggle for justice, dignity, and freedom. His courage, faith, and vision are the foundation of our collective identity – said Harčević.

As part of the event, a rich cultural and sports program is planned – forums, exhibitions, folklore and sevdah evenings, as well as the promotion of the book 'Freedom Written in Blood' by Hamza Refik Kauković. The closing will be on August 15, with the commemoration of the 33rd anniversary of the founding of the 505th Knightly Brigade and paying tribute to the defenders of the homeland.

On the same day, the methodological demonstration exercise 'Earthquake 2025' will be held with the participation of the Armed Forces of BiH, Civil Protection, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Una-Sana Canton, fire departments, and other services, with the aim of demonstrating readiness for crisis situations.

Bužim today, in addition to preserving tradition, also faces the challenges of modern times – youth emigration, economic insecurity, and the need for development. However, Imam Harčević emphasizes that Bužim does not give up.

– The Islamic community, schools, and cultural associations strive to preserve the spirit of togetherness. The economy is developing slowly, but it needs stronger support – says Harčević.

Mayor Nanić adds that international partners, such as the Qatar Development Fund, are helping to realize important projects. The focus in the coming period will be on opening a business zone, modernizing transport infrastructure, building a kindergarten, and continuing the city's development.

– Bužim has enormous potential. Our goal is for it to be a place where people stay, build their future, and live with pride – concludes Mayor Nanić.
