Number of infected reaches 2 million, most countries extend emergency measures until May

(Patria) – The number of confirmed coronavirus infections worldwide has reached 1,924,314, while the death toll is at least 119,655. A total of 447,976 people have recovered from the disease.

Cities and countries around the world remain in quarantine or 'lockdown', with emergency measures extended mostly until mid or late May.

On Monday evening, French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation and announced an extension of measures until May 11. In that country, the coronavirus has claimed nearly 15,000 lives, while 9,000 are hospitalized. A total of 136,779 have been infected.

In the United Kingdom, 11,000 people died in just one day; some experts predict that the country could become the most affected European country.

In one of the hardest-hit countries in the world, Spain, measures have been somewhat relaxed to allow a return to work for some industrial sectors.

Poland announced it is considering a gradual lifting of measures, with the first step being the reopening of shops. It was also announced that the Polish government will make key decisions in the next two days.

The number of infected in the world's epicenter of the pandemic, the USA, stands at 587,155, with 23,644 deaths.
