British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt marked the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide

LONDON, (Patria) - British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt marked the 24th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, paying tribute to over 8,000 victims.

Today marks 24 years since the massacre in Srebrenica – one of the largest crimes committed in Europe after World War II. More than 8,000 mostly men, youths, and boys were victims of this brutal act of genocide in and around the town of Srebrenica.

On this day, the Foreign Secretary highlighted the importance of working on the legacy of Srebrenica by ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.

He also welcomed the strong message of the historic verdict delivered this year on the appeal in the Karadžić case, which confirms that justice cannot be evaded. The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) delivered a verdict increasing the sentence of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžić from 40 years in prison to life imprisonment.

On the 24th anniversary, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said:

"Today, 24 years after the Srebrenica massacre, we must pay tribute to the victims, their families and communities, whose lives have been cruelly and irrevocably changed.

It is important that we continue to confront and condemn any attempt to deny the crime that occurred in Srebrenica.

The United Kingdom remains committed to assisting the region in overcoming the legacy of past conflict, and in building a more peaceful, prosperous, and stable future for all. This must include fighting for justice for the victims.

The United Kingdom supports the work of the IRMCT and other organisations in seeking justice, supporting survivors, and striving to find and identify those still missing after the conflict in the region. This year's historic decision to increase Karadžić's sentence is a just and important reminder that those who commit horrific crimes will not go unpunished."

At last week's Western Balkans Summit in Poznań, Prime Minister Theresa May and Minister of State for Europe and the Americas, Sir Alan Duncan, reminded the leaders of the Western Balkans and Europe of their shared responsibility to respect values and implement the commitments agreed upon in the Joint Declaration on War Crimes and Missing Persons, which was signed at the Western Balkans Summit held in 2018 in London.
