(Patria) - Briton Graham Bamford, 33 years ago today, specifically on April 29, 1993, in broad daylight in front of the British House of Commons, doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire to draw the world's attention, and above all the British public's, to the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the suffering of its citizens.
This poignant act was an expression of deep humanity and despair over the injustice he witnessed through the media.
In his farewell letter, Bamford clearly stated that "the British army must not be an honor guard at a mass funeral," emphasizing that the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially women and children, need concrete protection, not just observation of the tragedy.
Although he had no personal connection to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the images of horror from the war deeply affected him. According to testimonies from his acquaintances and psychologists, he saw his own child in every child victim.
His condition worsened further after the news of the massacre in Ahmići on April 16, 1993, when 116 civilians were killed, including a three-month-old baby.
Unfortunately, although his act left a strong mark and was recognized as a symbol of moral courage, Graham Bamford is rarely remembered institutionally in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
His name is only mentioned occasionally, and there is still no adequate memorial to permanently preserve the memory of his sacrifice.
In memory of Graham Bamford and his brave act, a delegation from the Bosnia and Herzegovina UK Network will lay flowers in front of the British Parliament tomorrow, paying tribute to the man who tried to awaken the world's conscience with his own life.
