Bosnia and Herzegovina lost its hero Izet Nanić exactly 28 years ago

(Patria) - On this day 28 years ago, August 5, 1995, Izet Nanić, general of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, commander of Bužim, and hero of the liberation war, died at the age of 30.

Nanić was the commander of the 505th Knightly Bužim Brigade of the 5th Corps of the Army of RBiH.

Units of the 5th Corps, concurrently with "Oluja" in Croatia, began liberation operations.

The 505th Knightly Brigade of Bužim, led by Izet Nanić, broke through enemy lines at Čorkovača and advanced towards Dvor na Uni.

Just a few hours before the final deblockade in the Vijenac area, commander Izet Nanić was killed in an ambush.

- Halfway to the command post where a broken group of Chetniks was being transferred, a firefight occurred, and that's when the commander died, shooting from his rifle.

He had already fired one magazine, replaced the second... - said Sead Jusić, the last commander of the 505th Knightly Brigade.

The night before his death, Izet Nanić wrote in his war diary:

"Everything is at stake... I hope it will succeed. Me with them, and then the people. Victory is near. It will be ours, God willing, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I feel I can do what I planned, that I have the strength and luck. I've invested everything. The power went out. Good luck."

Izet Nanić, son of Rasima and Ibrahim, was born on October 4, 1965, in Bužim. He was the second of their seven sons.

After primary school, he completed the Military High School in Zagreb. He enrolled in the Military Academy in 1984 in Belgrade (Air Defense and Anti-Aircraft Warfare track).

He spent one year in Sarajevo before completing his military education in Zagreb in 1987.

Until 1992, he worked as an active military officer in the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA).

At the beginning of the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, he became the commander of one of the most successful brigades of the Army of BiH - the 505th Knightly Brigade of Bužim.

For his wartime merits, Brigadier General Izet Nanić was awarded the Golden Lily in 1994, and posthumously (1998) the Order of the Hero of the Liberation War.

Data indicates that the 505th Knightly Brigade of Bužim, under the command of Izet Nanić, never lost an inch of territory in its zone of responsibility, and liberated over 300 square kilometers of occupied territory of our country.
